Meet Belarus- The Rescue Cat Who Blew The Internet With His Goofy Look

Belarus isn’t just adored, he is marketed too. This rescue cat has sold thousands of dollars worth of merchandise as most charities love emblazoning his face on their shirts.

Belarus suffers from a condition called strabismus, that makes him cross-eyed, giving him a perennially confused look. It was in June 2018 when a post about him went viral at the San Francisco Animal Care and Control (SFACC), which led Rachel Krall, a huge animal lover to go meet this adorable cat.

Rachel was never a cat person, but Belarus managed to rule over her heart in a matter of hours. It also seems to fit, considering Belarus’s page has close to 254,000 followers on Instagram!

Rachel, who hails from California had this to say about their meeting- “When I first saw him, I just thought he was the most hilariously adorable cat ever. I had never really been a cat person before but thought he would be the perfect cat. I sent his adoption picture to my family and their reactions were quite similar. They told me you have to go see him, so I did.”

Considering Rachel’s upbringing in an animal-centric household, it was understood that she was good at it. Yet, her one-roomed apartment was probably not sufficient for either human or animal. But how do you stop yourself from falling in love? Rachel and Belarus had the same emotions for each other.

As luck would have it, the day Rachel planned to go meet at the shelter was also the day when Belarus was delivered there by his old family.

The condition of Strabismus causes the deviation in the pupils held together by the rectus muscles. This might lead to abnormal positioning, which could cause gaze displacement.

Despite this condition, Belarus has no problems with vision, except his unbridled curiosity. Rachel says, “He is just like any other curious cat. He’s really adventurous and loves to explore new environments.  Belarus’ favorite toys are balls, twist ties and any other small object he can lay his paws on. One of his funnier habits is attempting to bury coffee and other ‘bad’ smelling things.”

But his look and his appearance have led to a major contract being signed with the clothing company Bonfire, where the entire profit goes to charity. This really is accentuated by his adorable lopsided grin, which is probably the millennial symbol of confusion.

‘Bonfire actually reached out to me, which is what sparked the idea. Last year, we donated $6,000 to shelters, with $4,000 to Belarus’ shelter SFACC, $1,000 to Sonoma Community Animal Response Team for their efforts saving animals from the Sonoma wildfire, and $1,000 to Cat Town of Oakland. While I had originally only pledged 50% of the profits to the shelter for our first campaign, I’ve actually donated 100% of proceeds.’ Rachel’s cat has been a part of a noble scheme.

Belarus continues to woo us with his confused look and that lopsided grin, and we hope he continues to do so in the near future.
